Dress and Shave Years Off Your Age: A Starter Guide to Look Sharp in Your 50s.

Want to look and feel younger? Know where and how to start to dress the part.

If you want to stand out and look ahead of your peers in terms of looks, dressing up is an easy way to do so. You don’t want to look old. Rather, you would want to be a fine-looking gentleman!

You may find it somewhat difficult to find clothing that fits older men, as many clothing names and brands are targeted at younger men and even teenagers. That makes it harder to find the clothing pieces you need. Finding brands and clothing items can be challenging, so we’re here to help you start.

Dressing young does not mean embracing ripped clothing or spiked hairstyles. In fact, older men may be at more liberty today to dress the way they want. There is less pressure to adapt to new clothing styles, unlike in our younger years. It is more acceptable nowadays for older folks to take better care of themselves and adapt to more recent styles. Since your wardrobe will be filled with classics, it is less confusing to select clothing pieces. Wearing classic pieces should not make you look old. There is a way to wear them so you look sharp.

The Whys

There is a saying that if you want to be something you should dress the part. Ask yourself the reasons. You might want to look younger, feel great, or look more respectable. More practical reasons include upping your dating game, having increased self-confidence, and improving respectability at work or at social functions. Others just want to stand out from the crowd. Another reason is simply not to look stuffy and easily stereotyped as ‘old’.

We have to focus on things that we can change. The things that bother us as we take on years, like graying hair and the appearance of wrinkles, are here to stay. There is nothing you can do about it. However, you can change the way you dress to look and feel young.

Styles and Clothing to Avoid

Start fixing your wardrobe by eliminating unneeded pieces first. Dressing like younger men often does not work for our age and body build. Tracksuit pants and joggers are meant for athletics and at home, but not when you go into a cafe or meet with people. These items are perfect when you are working out or running (which you must do), but are inappropriate in most settings.

The pieces that first need to go are distressed jeans, graphic tees, denim shorts, tight-fitting clothes, and baggy clothing. There is no way you can work on those pieces. Also, backward baseball caps sandals, and flip flops have to go. These items may look good when worn by teens or when you see them in magazines, but they are not for you. Just give them away to friends or donate to charity.

Fit and Properly Tailored Pieces Matters a Lot!

Look for clothing pieces that fit to your body. A proper-fit clothing shaves several years off your age. We all know how properly tailored pieces are miles in quality compared to off-the-rack clothing. So the first thing to do to look sharp is get yourself tailor-made pieces. Investing in high-quality clothing is worth every penny, and it will show up no matter the occasion.

You don’t need to shell out lots of money. Start with a few items like jackets, suits, and trousers. Note that three of each item will give you 27 possible combinations, which is more than enough to dress you for a week. Shop around using the internet or walk around your neighborhood. A lot of local tailor shops don’t advertise that much online and you will be surprised to see them in your area.

It is not right to say that off-the-shelf clothing should not be in your wardrobe, as some offer good selections for older men. There are known store brands that offer well-fitted classics such as jackets, dress shirts, trousers, and shoes. Don’t be shy about changing brands. Note that your body changes as you age, so you should feel free to change brands if you feel like it.

Pay Attention to Small Details

What matters a lot in style are the small things that pop out in the background. That’s why things such as cufflinks, a nice watch, a bracelet, and rings have a lot to say about your personal getup. Invest in these things and incorporate them into your wardrobe.

Another detail that matters is personal grooming. If you want to look younger, start by having a good trim and a shave at your local barbershop. Have a much-needed skincare and follow aftercare instructions. Your age-defying look will surely be noticed, we promise!

The last small detail has something to do with technology. We are living in a brave new world where living means sticking close to new tech. Sticking to an old, clunky clamshell phone will make you decades older than you really are. Be a nice-looking gent wielding a sleek phone or a handheld tablet. Use technology with confidence!

Small things can say a lot about you. Note that this is just a starter guide, and we have a lot more to discuss in other blogs. But hey, getting started on your wardrobe is a great way to start!

There is nothing bad about sticking to a new trend. Have you noticed that people are more welcoming to older men doing self-care? What is formerly viewed as outlandish or age-inappropriate clothing to older men is becoming unclear. That’s an advantage you have nowadays and you got to use that. So go and get started giving attention to the way you dress and start looking younger and sharp.
