Are you bothered with your looks and want to do something about it? Have you been told you look older than your peers? We all desire to look younger and one way to do it is to have better-looking skin.

But how can you do it if you already have wrinkles and stuff? Men are expected to live a rugged lifestyle. Like getting out of bed and heading straight out of the house without applying anything on the face. You probably didn’t pay enough attention to skincare when you were younger. Some of you might even ask, why do it now?

Hey, if you want to look your best, it is worth your time to start taking care of your skin. A regular skincare routine is more than just washing your face. Every step should be done with purpose. If you are reading our Silver Athlete blogs, you know that we want you to achieve the best well-being and self-image. If that’s gonna happen, you have to learn to take care of your skin and we will show you how to do it.

It is easy to get confused as there are a ton of products out there. Just take a peek at the shelves of your local pharmacy or browse an online store, and be welcomed by tons of products, most of which you do not need.

Hey, Why I Got Wrinkles in the First Place?

Wrinkles, age spots, fine lines, and dry skin are problems associated with aging, and these are natural and will become more prominent through the years.

As you can see, the skin is a living, functioning organ. The surface (the epidermis) that you see and touch is made of dead cells, and below it (the dermis) are the living cells that constantly divide and die as they gradually move into the surface. That’s why our skin can repair itself and look renewed after a session in the spa.

However, time does change on how your skin repairs itself. Aging causes these living skin cells to reproduce less. The skin also tends to produce less sweat and sebum (the natural skin lubricant), which helps a lot in moisturizing the skin. There is less blood flow, and all of the mentioned factors contribute to the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and dry skin. Older guys tend to have drier and thinner skin that gets damaged easily, so it needs more care.

Certain lifestyles affect the appearance of the skin. Sun exposure causes the skin to age faster. Stress causes cortisol levels to rise, which causes the degradation of collagen (the main structural component of the skin). Consumption of dairy and foods high in sugars can cause more production of sebum and contribute to oily skin.

Start Taking Care of Your Skin

You have to start now and stick to it like a soldier is with their gun. Yes, and you will look definitely younger (and feel like one) when you have a regular skincare routine as younger folks do. However, with the abundance of magazines and blogs about skincare, it is easy to be confused about how to start.

Get things sorted out by consulting with your dermatologist. An expert can determine what skin type you have (dry, oily, or dry and oily) and if you have any skin conditions.

The goal of your skincare routine is to protect your skin from environmental damage and promote repair. Any decent skincare routine typically involves three things: sun protection, moisturizers, and face wash.

Age spots are often worsened by sun exposure, so you have to wear the right sunblock whenever you go outdoors. Although messier to apply, sunblock with 50 spf provides the best protection against skin-damaging ultraviolet rays. It sits on top of your skin, providing protection and reducing loss of moisture. Remember that your skin is fragile, so apply sunblock every two hours, and make sure to use an umbrella or a cap to shade yourself.

Moisturizers make your skin soft and supple and can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It protects your skin from water loss. Apply every time your face feels dry or flakey. Apply after washing the face to lock in moisture. You need to apply before bedtime, as your skin experiences water loss when you sleep.

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser. The choice of washing your face with cold or hot water depends on the situation. Cold water reduces puffiness and may help reduce skin irritation, while warm water is better at removing grime and oil buildup. Use a toner in case you have oily skin. You can wash your face before sleeping or after strenuous activity.

Get Started on a Skincare Routine Right Away!

Also important is a healthy lifestyle. A diet rich in greens, lean meat, and whole grains is good for your skin. Note that things such as cigarette smoke, improper shaving, stress, and inadequate sleep have a lot to do with making your skin look unhealthy

Does skin care can shave years off my looks? Definitely yes. Getting on with years necessarily should not make you look like one. There are ways you can keep things in check, like your skin. Just do it now and do it correctly. Make it a part of your self-care routine every day, and let others notice the changes!
